First ear infections...and steps!

Poor little Grace. Saturday her nose started running like a faucet and then Sunday morning we woke up to this:
She became increasingly pitiful throughout the day and cried out all night long, so we went to visit Dr. Smith on Monday and turns out sweet girl has a double ear infection. She's on antibiotics now and I'm just praying they'll kick in before Thursday. It's breaking my heart. We've dealt with random rashes, congestion, even a bout of bronchiolitis, but she's never been uncomfortable (or in flat out pain) like this. All she wants is to be cuddled and even then it's like she can't get close enough. I feel so bad, especially being that it's her birthday week and we're leaving her for Mexico in six days. :(

On a brighter note, she decided to grace us with her first steps on Sunday...yes, in the midst of her developing ear issues and general crumminess. I thought I saw her take a few toward Annabelle out of the corner of my eye, but didn't know if my eyes were playing tricks on me. We grabbed the camera and some enticing objects and were able to capture this:

It's not much, but it was huge to us because we'd been afraid it would happen while we were gone. I knew it'd be an awesome thing to see, but was surprised by how much it affected me (the fact that she is turning one, feeling so miserable yet being so sweet, and about to have us leave her for a week probably doesn't help). I'm a bit of a sentimental and emotional mess...and I'm pretty sure I've transformed (at least temporarily) into that sappy parent that used to get on my nerves! Oh well, whaddya do?

Three Years Down

Just give us some leather already! We celebrated our third wedding anniversary on the 18th. DeeDee came to hang out with Grace while we went out for some sushi and wine. Before dinner, we randomly stopped in at the cigar shop next door and David picked out a treat. I think we may have a new tradition. :) While very low-key, it was the perfect evening...we just thoroughly enjoy being together, sans baby (although we love her dearly) and sans distractions. Here's to fifty-something more years together!

Probably need to throw these in too, just because...

HHS Class of 2000 Reunites

It's been ten years since I graduated from high school and left Huntsville, first for College Station and then the Big D (guess that could stand for Dallas and David). I'd say it seems crazy that it's been that long, but so much has happened in those ten years it's not that hard to believe. What I did think would be strange was going back for the reunion and, to be honest, I was surprised by how much fun it was. I've really only remained close with one person, Erin - we were next door neighbors and each other's first girlfriend, then also wound up being college roommates (and she a bridesmaid in our wedding). Sadly enough, most everyone else I just keep up with on Facebook. Guess going off to different schools and ending up in different cities will do that to ya. It was so neat to hang out with everyone again, hear their stories, and see how they have or haven't changed. David was a good sport (as always) and seemed to have an equally fun time, despite only knowing Erin and her boyfriend beforehand. Who are we kidding, the guy never meets a stranger! As a side bonus, Grace got some good GramB and Papa John time in. Thanks to my mom for being an amazing hostess and babysitter. :)

Fun With Friends

Grace has had some good times - which, of course, make for good pictures - with her little buddies this summer. Here are a few cute moments captured lately:

Hiding with Briggs...and Gabbie
Staying cool at Hawaiian Falls with Cooper
Posing for pictures during playgroup at Lily's
Being big at the park with Sam
Going in for a (totally unprompted) kiss with Colton

Eleven Months

It seems impossible that this is the last "month" post and second-to-last official chair picture. Grace isn't a baby anymore...she's turned into a little person. Part of me wants to be sad about it, but the other part is having so much fun watching it happen. Her little personality is 95% sunshine and 5% lightening. She smiles and laughs nearly all day long, but when she gets mad she can really turn on the drama. This is almost always due to not getting to play with a TV remote, cell phone, or laptop. Occasionally, the torturous activity that is lotioning up and putting on pj's after bath can bring out the temper as well. Thankfully, though, she's back to being patient and cooperative for diaper changes!

There've not been a ton of new developments this month, but one area I've noticed a big change in is talking. She talks all day long, and it actually sounds like conversation...asking questions, answering questions, etc. I just don't know what she thinks she's saying! The obvious ones we've picked up on are:
- saying "beebee" when picking up her baby doll
- saying "pip-pee" when crawling toward the dogs (we call one of them Puppy half the time)
- saying "bobba" when I'm making a bottle
- addressing us as "momma" and "dad-dee"

She's also standing up with no help and balancing for quite a while. It really freaked me out the first time I turned around to see her standing there by herself! She has no interest in pushing a walker or walking with us, which is fine with me. We haven't encouraged it at all as of yet. We have been working on waving a bit, which she also has very little interest in. She just wants to clap! The other thing we're working on is being gentle. Grace has moments (usually with her doll or with real babies) where she's more cautious and delicate, but the majority of the time she's like a bulldozer. This is probably our fault because we've never really treated her like she's breakable, so she's a pretty tough little girl...she just expects everyone else to be tough too. She also thinks she's invincible, except for when it comes to the two steps by her bedroom hallway. She's been able to go up them for months, but still - despite multiple practice sessions - refuses to come down them alone.

I'm anxious to see her stats next month because I've been told by others that she's slimming down. I figured this would happen as she became more active, but don't notice it since I see her every day. We just made the move from four bottles to three and soon we'll start adding whole milk. She's got this nifty one-handed bottle hold now that makes us laugh. We're all but done with the baby food, so I'm having to think about her meals more. She prefers to feed herself if possible...it's definitely getting messier! She's a great eater, though, so I can't complain. She's also an amazing sleeper. She goes 13 hours at night and averages 2-3 during the day, but she's really flexible. I rarely have trouble adjusting her schedule for church, errands, activities, etc. She's been the perfect baby for us, so it'll be interesting to see what God has in store next time around. No, there's not another one in the forecast just yet! Here's some pictures of Grace standing and eating like a big girl this month:

Summer Visitors: Part Deux

Well, we had another fun round of company this week. It started with GramB coming back up, but bringing GiGi this time! My sweet Gram had been itching to see Grace since Mother's Day and it finally worked out for her to accompany my mom. I scheduled my big "back to blond" hair appointment during their visit (can't pass up free and unlimited babysitting) which, unfortunately, turned into quite the process. They definitely got some good Gracie time in! We also enjoyed lunch with Kimmie one day, then shopped 'til we dropped the rest of the time. GiGi and Grace were troopers...I love to shop, but even I have a hard time keeping up with my mom. :)

My brothers then came up for a visit before going off to school. They've done this every summer for the past seven years...partly for fun, largely for school clothes shopping. It started after Terri's car accident in the summer of 2003, when they came to be with me in College Station for a bit while our dad stayed at the Medical Center in Houston. They were scared and anxious and I just wanted to do whatever I could to provide a sense of normalcy. To me, that included playing mom and ensuring they started 6th and 8th grade with a nice assortment of new clothes. It's been our thing ever since. This visit was extra special to me as, realistically, it'll probably be the last. I'm sure they'll come see us individually now and then, but with being at two different schools, Kody playing football, and just college life in general, the odds are they won't be clearing and aligning their schedules anytime soon (if ever). Guess we'll have to figure out a new tradition...
